India's Growing E-Waste Challenge and Recycling Efforts

India generates approximately 3.2 million tonnes of electronic waste annually, according to recent estimates. Only about 30% of this waste currently enters formal recycling channels, with the remainder processed through informal networks that often employ hazardous methods.

The informal e-waste sector provides livelihoods for many workers but frequently involves dangerous practices such as burning circuit boards to extract metals. These methods expose workers to toxic substances and create environmental contamination.

Several startups and organizations are developing safer recycling alternatives. Some companies are implementing plant-based extraction methods for precious metals, while others focus on creating better collection systems. Consumer awareness programs aim to educate the public about proper e-waste disposal options, including apps that facilitate the selling or recycling of old electronics.
